World Space Week 2006 Report
With World Space Week falling in the school holiday period in Australia, most WSW activities tend to fall either a little before or after the designated
week, within the local school terms.
On 17 October, the Schools Space Technology Symposium was held at Arndell Anglican College, Oakville, NSW. This is an academic-style conference offering
school students from Years 5-12 the opportunity to present a paper about their work on a space-related project to an audience of their peers. For the 2006 Symposium, Ms. Kerrie Dougherty, Curator of Space Technology
at the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney, was the keynote speaker.
ASRI, the Australian Space Research Institute continued firings in its Small Sounding Rocket Program designed to carry educational payloads for schools and
universities. A sounding rocket campaign was undertaken over the weekend of September 29-October 1 at the Woomera Rocket Range, with at least three rockets being launched.
A space education workshop for teachers was held in Sydney on October 13, 2006. This workshop was designed to provide teachers with the latest techniques,
tools and resources for teaching young people about the space exploration, technology & science.
The Australian International Space School was held in Adelaide 28 September-3 October, 2006. Year 11 students from Australia and overseas participated in a
space education program that included a visit to the Woomera Rocket Range to attend the ASRI sounding rocket launch.
The Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space held vigils and distributed leaflets throughout the week in Byron Bay.
