World Space Week 2000 Plans

Rio De Janeiro -- Sept. 30 - Oct. 2 -- 25th anniversary of Apollo-Soyuz Test Project with appearances by cosmonaut Gen. Alexei Leonov and astronaut Gen. Thomas Stafford, courtesy of Omega. Their historic handshake in space launched a new era of international cooperation in space. Activities of Leonov and Stafford in Rio will include

  • Sept. 29 -- Press Conference -- At the Sofitel Hotel in Rio on at 2 pm. 
  • Sept. 29 -- Public Lecture -- At the Rio Planetarium, 8:00 - 9:30 p.m.
  • Oct. 1 -- "Lunar Rover Parade" -- Legendary Indy 500 winner Emerson Fittipaldi will join Stafford and Leonov in driving a Lunar Rover along a 2-km section of Ipanema Beach from 11:00 am to 1:00 p.m. The public and media are invited.
  • Oct. 2 -- Autograph Session -- At the Omega exhibit at the International Astronautical Congress exhibition, immediately after the Opening Ceremony (approx. noon).

Rio De Janeiro -- Oct. 2-6 -- The world's largest annual conference of space leaders, the International Astronautical Congress, takes place at the RioCentro. In addition to outstanding technical presentations, an excellent exhibition will be open to the public. Organized by the International Astronautical Federation and other leading world organizations.

Sao Paulo -- Oct. 9-11 -- An exciting space conference with programs for both students and adults will be held.  Click to download program (in Word). Organized by Brazsat and leading educational institutions.

Rio -- Oct. 4 -- "Exploring Mars: In Space and In the Classroom," 7:30 p.m., at the Observatario Nacional, sponsored by the Planetary Society.

The Spaceweek do Brazil Committee began preparations for World Space Week 2000 by demonstrating an educational program for students in Rio in August 1999. Spaceweek do Brasil was sponsored by Brazsat with help from the Society for International Space Cooperation. It was attended by leaders of INPE and other key Brazilian aerospace and educational organizations.
