  • Canada was proud to host the International Astronautical Congress in Vancouver during World Space Week 2004. The IAC is the world's largest annual conference devoted to space technology.
  • The Space Generation Congress (SGC) was planned for October 1-10 in Vancouver. SGC is a meeting of approximately 200 international young delegates to implement the vision of young people on the future utilization and exploration of space.
  • Vancouver Space Fest was a full week program of various space-related activities offered to the public. Space Fest offered the public a chance to meet space experts from around the world and learn about the wonder of space and the fascinating work accomplished in space.

Below are details:

The Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute (CASI), a non-profit scientific and technical organization devoted to the advancement of the art, science and engineering relating to aeronautics, astronautics, and associated technologies and their applications will be celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. It did this by hosting the 55th annual Congress of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF), a non-governmental association and consortium of the International Academy of Astronautics and the International Institute of Space Law.  The Federation draws its global membership from space agencies, institutes and space research centers, learned societies, professional associations, schools and universities, space manufacturers and services providers and users, specialized law and consulting firms.

In close cooperation with the United Nations, the IAF also organises an annual Space Workshop for Developing Nations and seminars on space activities at meetings of the United Nations and together with the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) and the International Institute for Space Law, develops an annual survey of Highlights in Space for the United Nations.

The Canadian Space Agency will greatly contribute to the success of this week-long conference. The Agency has been working closely with CASI and MacDonald Detwiller and Associates and other members of the organizing committee to secure the bid for Canada and to ensure the success of this prestigious international space conference, which will be attended by more than 1500-2000 high-level participants and university graduate level students.

The conference began October 4th at the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver with a gala opening ceremony hosted by Canadian Space Agency Chief Astronaut Julie Payette. Monday afternoon the conference exhibition area opened to delegates and plenary sessions began and continue over the next four days.
