Czech Republic 2005

World Space Week 2005 Report

The 2005 year was the fourth year of the Czech Republic participation in the WSW in line.

As in the previous years, the Czech Space Office (www.czechspace.cz) is the main organizer of the Czech participation. Involvement of professional as well as individual organizations was managed and coordinated by Mr. Milan Halousek, editor of KOSMOS –NEWS astronautics bulletin.

The WSW 2005 events had been focused in several occasions to specific space events having had occurred about the term of the Space week. Among them the high interest was devoted to the shuttle return to flight after Columbia tragedy in 2003. Other topics were the second manned flight in China and the third tourist visit to ISS. Main event in unmanned space flight was mainly the impact to comet Tempel 1 of the Deep Impact probe.

Activities accomplished have been primarily organized by professional astronomy observations in the Czech Republic. Positive feature is increased number of activities at elementary and secondary schools mainly those prepared and organized by teachers and students themselves.

A dedicated free flier has been prepared for the occasion of the Space week containing explaining and presenting various spin-off space technologies. The flyer has been distributed to general public at many opportunities in total volume of 6000 copies. It was well received and efficiently contributed to general public awareness on usage of space technology to ordinary life.

Various astronomical observatories planned and organized programs and lectures for the general public during the World Space Week period and we appreciate the effort of all organizations and individual persons contributing into the list of events which all were interesting and acknowledged by hundreds of participants.

One of the events was meeting with attractive lecture presented by Swiss astronaut Claude Nicollier for interested public and experts at the Academy of Sciences. Two meetings were organized also with Czech astronaut-candidate, Oldřich Pelčák (Soyuz 28, 1978).

Great exhibition on space containing photos, maps, documents and models was accomplished in commercial center in Pardubice. During several days a large crowd of general public had got an interesting opportunity to get more familiar with content and general importance of the space research and space flights.

Besides public observatories several events took place at elementary and secondary schools and attended by several hundreds students in Praha, Sokolov, Nymburk abd other cities. A group of students from high school in Nymburk visited Euro Space Center in Belgium.

World Space Week has been celebrated by a lot of propagators, individuals and enthusiasts, who are keen on astronautics and who are actively involved in promoting space activities.

Number of participants at the WSW events has increased by almost 30 % comparing to last year, reaching almost 3000 people. It is encouraging that especially young people from primary and high schools were attended.

Information and announcements about the World Space Week appeared on a large number of web pages. Besides dedicated web page (see below) especially web sites of the Czech Astronomical Society www.astro.cz and KOSMO club www.kosmo.cz, the Czech Space Portal have publicized the event. Moreover, the Czech Astronomical Society published the official press release and prepared information about WSW for press conference during the International Book Fair.

Media has paid attention to the World Space Week, too. Notional newspapers Lidove noviny and Pravo published article on WSW objectives and some events in our country. Television and radio stations both local and national ones came with interviews and reports about related activities.

It is coinstantaneous intention of the organizers to increase general SWS awareness not only among enthusiasts and people being interested in space but also in the other fields, which there are not directly connected with space research and technology.
