Czech Republic 2006

World Space Week 2006 Report

For the fifth time in row Czech Republic participated in World Space Week, thanks to the support of the Czech Space Office (CSO). More than one hundered events in dozens of places directly targeted few thousand people, and much more were reached by media coverage of World Space Week.

  • Activities at Schools – There was strong growth of interest of WSW in schools, with an estimated doubling of participation compared with past years. The breadth of school activities included radio broadcasting, small exhibitions, articles in school magazines and on intranet pages, lectures with teachers and specialists, and visits to public observatories. Some schools held very successful visual arts competitions, with the winners rewarded by prizes supplied by CSO.
  • Activities at Public Observatories – Strong emphasis of WSW in the Czech Republic is at public observatories. Celebrating WSW this year for example were observatories in Valasske Mezirici, Hradec Králove, Uhersky Brod, Upice, Prostejov, Vsetin, Pardubice, Hradek u Nechanic. Their activites were mostly in the form of public lectures, exhibitions, and information in their bulletins.
  • Activities on Web – WSW 2006 was possible to find on dozens of places on the Czech internet. The main page was at www.czechspace.cz/skt (with regulary updated list of prepared events). A special event on the web for WSW 2006 was the premier opening of a web site www.kosmo.cz/laik (space oriented web for beginners) into Czech language.
  • Activities in Media – The biggest change in WSW 2006 was obtaining of media partner! This partner was „Lidove noviny"(average daily printed 120 thousand copies, one of the biggest newspapers in Czech Republic). WSW was also broadcasted in many radio stations (including countrywide stations like Český rozhlas Leonardo, Český rozhlas Brno, Rádio Proglas, etc.).
  • Other Activities – Very important was the involvement of the non-profit sector in WSW. Very active were associations Kosmos News and Kosmo Klub which promoted WSW in a variety of ways.

WSW 2006 was a successful continuance of the tradition started during past years. CSO also helped to establish a large number of new activities. This wider and wider scope of this annual celebration is very promising for not just the jubilee year 2007, but also forthcoming years.
