| Event Name: | World Bank / NEWMAP/SSKE GEOSPATIAL Conference & Knowledge Fair |
| Event Description: | Focus of the Conference The South-South Knowledge Exchange Conference (Knowledge Fair) on Geospatial Technologies is linked to Global Space Week 2017, and will address the overall theme of “Exploring New Worlds in Space: Challenges and Prospects for Nigeria”. The conference will facilitate knowledge sharing and learning across four key areas: (i) Global advances in geospatial technology for integrated watershed and erosion management; (ii) Geo-portal and DSS for project implementation, monitoring & policy making; (iii) The use of geospatial technology for Evapotranspiration (ET) management; and (iv) Comparative assessments of drones, satellites imagery and high resolution ortho-photos for monitoring & evaluation. |

| Report on the Results: | Expected Results (i) Improved understanding about the importance of geo-spatial education; (ii) Improved support for Integrated Watershed and Erosion Management as a means of sustainable economic development, based on good geo-survey and satellite images; (iii) Young people in Nigeria excited about applications of science and technology, engineering, and math to real world natural resource management problems; and (iv) Stronger international cooperation in space outreach and education to support: o Gully restoration design, construction, physical works, and vegetative interventions; o Landscape restoration and agricultural and pastoral improvement in arid, rainfed areas; application of remote Sensing, GIS, and Decision Support Systems for more effective project management, and M&E; and o Urban and peri-urban road design and management of surface water runoff (main cause of gullies in southern Nigeria). |
