Event Name:  Keep Space for Peace Week
Event Description:  Since 2001 Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space (www.space4peace.org ) has held Keep Space for Peace Week (KS4P) during the time of the United Nations World Space Week in order to point out the dangers in space militarization and “Star Wars” projects. WILPF has participated actively in Global Network from 1998 onward and has always emphasized the need for international space law and supporting institutions to keep space safe for peaceful use by all nations and peoples. Since 2005 WILPF has co-sponsored KS4P internationally. WILPF Reaching Critical Will UN offices in Geneva and New York have been the contact point and U.S. WILPF has been making the annual reports to the World Space Week Association, UNOOSA and COPUOS. Report on the Results:  Twenty nine events in the United States were reported to Global Network as taking place during the first half of October with 20 of them during United Nations World Space Week. They emphasized the dangers of space militarization and called for strengthening international space law. Events included a speech in Washington D.C. by Bruce Gagnon, coordinator of Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space and vigils at the White House and Pentagon. Vigils and/or meetings were held at Vandenberg AFB, Shriver AFB and Kirtland AFB, at Bath Me Iron Works (General Dynamics), Andover, Ma (Raytheon) and also at the Omaha NE Strat Com conference. Other KS4P events occurred in Portland, OR, Catonsville MD, Washington D.C., Seattle WA, North Andover MA, New York, NY, Fairbanks Alaska, Colorado Springs CO, and Bloomington IN. Although the film does not yet have a U.S. distributor there were eight showings of PAX Americana and the Weaponization of Space in Kansas City, Florence OR, Bloomington IN, Ashville NC, Duluth MN and Albuquerque NM. There were four showings of the WILPF member produced new DVD Silent Screams protesting satellite guided drone assassination attacks. Portland OR WILPF and San Francisco Code Pink also protested drones. The WILPF produced DVD A Space for Peace was shown in Tucson, AZ. These and other Global Network DVDs will be actively promoted during 2011. We must prevent an arms race in outer space (PAROS) and make space safe for all nations and life on earth.
