The Space Research Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences was founded in 1970, and the Austrian Space Agency in 1972. Austria decided to be an active player in space activities right from the very beginning. This decision stimulated the development of Austrian space technology, the space industry and space exploration. After more than 20 years of successful cooperation between Austria and the former Soviet Union in the field of unmanned space research, the joint Austro-Soviet space project AUSTROMIR-91 Soyuz TM-13 mission with Austrian cosmonaut Franz Viehbock was launched on 2 October 1991 from Baikonur for a 1- week's stay at the Space Station Mir. 220 persons had answered the advertisement from the Austrian Space Agency (ASA) for the AUSTROMIR 91 Mission including 20 women. ELKE GRIEDL was one of two women shortlisted for the mission. As a pilot and trainer and member of the Austrian Association for Women Pilots, she continues to inspire women to the take the skies. LISA KALTENEGGER, Austrian Astronomer & Astrophysicist, World-leading expert on exoplanets, founder and director of the Carl Sagan Institute. Lisa Kaltenegger serves on NASA senior review of operating missions. The Carl Sagan Institute was founded in 2015 at Cornell University to find life in the universe and explore other worlds – how they form, evolve and if they could harbour life both inside and outside of our own Solar System. The institute collaborates with international institutions on fields such as astrophysics, engineering, earth and atmospheric science, geology and biology. DORIS VICKERS Austrian Archaeoastronomer, Content Manager UNESCO Portal to the Heritage of Astronomy in collaboration with the International Astronomical Union (IAU).
