Event Name:  Space Guiding Your Way
Event Description:  The 25th Acharnes’ Primary School located in Eastern Attica (Greece) consisting of 255 pupils with a view to deepen the knowledge of its students in the subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) took an active part for a second consecutive year at the festivities concerning the commemoration of the World Space Week which lasted for a whole week (from 6-10 of October 2014) and included a large variety of events and lectures/speeches delivered by eminent scientists. For the first time we managed to combine the performance of physical activities along with Space exploration as the 6th of October was declared as a National Day for School Sports this year. This year’sfestivities were organised in association with the Institute of Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Applications & Remote Sensing of the National Observatory of Athens (IAASARS). EVENTS’ SCHEDULE Monday the 6th of October2014 • Grand Opening: Mr. Nick Tremoulis representing Sparta’s Astronomic Agency talked to thepupils of the school about the utility of the sun andtried to enlighten them through the observation of the sun by using two telescopes set up at the school’s courtyard. This activity was supervised by the astrophotographer Anthony Farmakopoulos. • Commemorating the National Day for School Sports our school was involved in several athletic events which formed part of the international educational challenge called Mission X: Train like an Astronaut (trainlikeanastronaut.org) Tuesday the 7th of October • Dr. Dimitris Paronis researcher of the IAASARS gave a lecture to the students of the 4th, 5th and 6th grade about ‘The Earth’s Observation fromthe Outer Space’. The event was also attended by pupils from the 5th grade of Acharnes’ 2nd Primary School. Wednesday the 8th of October • Dr. Manolis Georgoulis Fellow of the ResearchCentre of Astronomy and Applied Mathematics at Athens’ Academy made a speech in front of the pupils of the 4th, 5th, 6th grade of our school along with students from the 6th grade of Acharnes’ 15th PrimarySchool. Thursday the 9th of October • Drs Anastasia Fiori-Metallinou, Public Outreach Officer in the IAASARS spoke at students of all the grades on the topic of Sounds from the Outer Space. Pupils of the 6th grade of Acharnes’ 22nd Primary School attended the event. A European Space Agency’s film was shown titled The Earth observed from the Space and Athens, the City of Wisdom followed up by a conversation with pupils. • As a token of our partnership with the visiting schools which honored us and were enthusiastically engaged in our initiative, we provided all the participant teachers with vital freeinformation on how to receive free of charge materialfrom the European Space Agency (ESA) for the purposesof Primary Education. The pupils who were invited took an entertaining guided tour of the space-like areas in our school. • A School Counselor along with a group of representatives from our local authorities honored uswith their presence. A host of respected journalists and other correspondents commented elaborately on ourinitiatives and covered extensively our events. In addition, a detachable children’s section of a widelycirculated newspaper (H Kathimerini, 18-10-2014 titled ‘Erevnites’) was distributed to the pupils as a memento for their participation at the festivities dedicated to the Space. Friday the 10th of October • The events came to a close with the 3rd, 5th and 6th grade’s visit at Penteli’s Observatory. Throughout the duration of the festivities the informational booklet Space Guides Our Way/Life in Space was distributed to all the students and visitors.
