Results Report:
Rockets and planets galore at the Ski-Akademie Schladming. In the context of the World Space Week and in consultation with the Competence Centre for Space Law and Space Policy at the University of Graz (European Centre for Space Law NPOC Austria/Sub-Point Graz, Austria) , 18 students of the 4aHAK embarked on a trip into space. After an initial introduction to the topic – what is space, how did the solar system develop - they were given various tasks to complete over the course of three hours. One group decided to create their very own solar system, out of Styrofoam and wire. The second group was given a model kit for a remote controlled Mars rover, which they set about building and driving around the classroom, picking up rubbish off the floor. The third group was given various crafting materials, which they had to turn into rockets according to instructions on the internet: a balloon rocket, a matchstick rocket, a water bottle rocket and a baking soda rocket. After some hesitation, they set about their tasks and gradually became more and more enthusiastic about them. The rocket launches were most anticipated, a lot of them failing at first and creating a lot of havoc. But with time the students became more creative and inventive. The solar system was particularly intriguing as they tried to figure out the best way to display it. And the rover was quick to build, but not so easy to make it work. In the end, time ran out for a final presentation, which will be held next week – much looked forward to by the students. All exhibits turned out beautifully and were well worth the effort. The day was a huge success and taught the students a world they had not yet heard a lot about and they were able to show their creativity and incentive in new fields.
