World Space Week 2006 Report
World Space Week was celebrated in Greece for the first time. A series of events took place as follows:
Eugenides Foundation Planetarium hosted a series of events to celebrate the WSW.
- The leading event for WSW 2006 was the exhibition of C. Dionysatos' giant collection of approximately 10,000 space stamps from 330 countries,
ranging from 1957 to 2003. The collection also included many first day envelopes and covers and special commemorating series, from NASA, ESA, Soviet and later Russian space programs.
- An art exhibition was organized, by the name "Multiverse" by Apostolos Kilessopoulos. The exhibition comprised of paintings and installations
inspired by space exploration and cosmological quests. The public was really enthusiastic by both the artwork and the ideas that motivated the artist.
- A special planetarium show was presented with original music score by the famous Greek composer Mimis Plessas named "Dance of the Planets". The show
took the spectators to a journey through manned and unmanned solar system exploration.
- The Eugenides Foundation arranged during the WSW to also present their new shows on Black Holes and Dark Caverns getting additional media attention.
The Society for Astronomy and Space held a special event in the city of Volos, for honoring the students who participated and won the National Student
Space Contest. The first two students are awarded a travel to NASA's U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. After the award ceremony a public talk was given by the university professor of Space
Physics, P. Preka (University of Athens) titled "To Mars and Beyond" presenting the planet exploration orbiters and probes.
We are now organizing for next year's 50th anniversary of the first space mission hopefully extending space awareness to more schools and the public.
