Message from UN Secretary General

  • The United Nations officially launched World Space Week 2000 on October 4 with events at UN Headquarters in New York and in Vienna
  • Top Chinese leaders spoke at a World Space Week public rally in Beijing
  • World Space Leaders met in Rio at the International Astronautical Congress.  Cosmonaut Alexei Leonov and Astronaut Tom Stafford drove a Lunar Rover along Ipanema Beach to promote space via the media.
  • Youth from across Australia met to develop a shared vision for the future of space
  • NASA promoted the role of women in space with special webcasts for teachers and children
  • Organizations in 30 nations held a wide variety of public events about space.
  • Thousands of teachers used space to excite children about learning.
