Highlights of World Space Week
October 4 - 10, 2004
Theme: Space and Sustainable Development

Highlights of World Space Week 2004 include:

  • The largest public space event in world history, with celebrations reported in over 40 nations on all seven continents, marking the 5th anniversary of World Space Week.
  • The successful launch of Space Ship One to win the X-Prize on October 4.  Burt Rutan discussed his successful quest at the Space Frontier Conference in Los Angeles.
  • Thousands marched through a remote village in Bangladesh celebrating World Space Week.
  • Other major World Space Week celebrations in Algeria, Bulgaria, Canada, Czech Republic, India, and elsewhere around the globe.
  • Meeting of world space leaders In Vancouver, Canada, at the International Astronautical Congress. Young adults discussed the future in space at the Space Generation Congress.
  • Teachers around the world used space to motivate students during World Space Week. For example, 13 schools celebrated this week in Barranquilla, Colombia.
  • Lance Bass appeared in Los Angeles schools October 7-8 to promote math and science education. Students globally designed Lance's Lab for the International Space Station.
