World Space Week 2004 Report
In cooperation with National Planetarium Jakarta, we held a star party and a general course on October 2 as an opening event of World Space Week. At this
event, we borrowed three portable telescopes from Bosscha Observatory. The participants were various, from junior high school to adults.
On October 9 we held a movie show. Two films were shown at this event: "Contact" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." We chose these films
because they are popular and contain astronomical concept. At the end of this event, there was discussion about the concepts of astronomy that were used in the films.
The culmination of World Space Week took place on October 11 and consisted of the following events:
- Rocket Show – The participants of this event were high school students. They showed water rockets that they designed themselves.
- Lectures – The theme of the lectures was "Titan: Ancient Earth?" They featured Mr. Taufik Hidayat, member of Cassini-Huygens mission's
crew, and speakers from department of Biology and Geology of the Institute Technology of Bandung. Many people attended this event.
- Exhibition – We held an exhibition featuring a panel 40 m long, rocket model, and simulation (by software). The panel addressed "Dreams to
Fly," from the myth of Icarus to recent space exploration.
- Solar Observation – The public was able to observe the sun with a four-inch Vixen telescope with filter that belonged to the Bosscha Observatory).
