World Space Week 2006 Report
The Merdeka Space Carnival was organized in conjunction with two celebrated event namely Malaysia 49th Independence Day and World Space Week. This program,
which was held at the National Planetarium compound on 16 September, was partly sponsored by Nutrigen IQ3. The reason being early celebration for WSW was because we had our fasting month on October. The
program is coordinated in such a way that everybody can get a glimpse of space science while having fun with their kids. Due to the National Angkasawan Program, we choose "Angkasawan" ("Astronaut" in Malay language)
as our theme.
Beginning as early as 8.30 am, kids between 5 to 12 years old gathered at the planetarium to register. Various activities had been planned for them.
Firstly, there was a telematch for kids between 5-7 years old. The telematch game was modified to resemble astronaut activities in space such as picking sample on moon and eating inside the International Space
Station. After that, kids aged 10-12 were asked to use their creativity and skills to produce space suit using everyday cheap materials that was provided. At the same time, kids between 7-9 years old with a family
member have a game where they need to come out with a meal suitable for astronaut in space by using some frozen food given to them. The judging process done by our two final angkasawan candidates, took
creativity, appearance and functionality of end products into consideration. No fees were charged to participants.
