World Space Week Report 2006

  • On October 3-4 "Days of Space Science" were held in Space Research Institute in Moscow. On October 3, a press conference took place regarding "Experiments in space: new results, what's ahead – from orbital telescope to Mars expedition". On October 4, several reports were presented on radioastronomy and space geodesy, the nature of dark matter, background X-ray radiation, shock waves in space, Moon: current problems and perspectives, and Humans in Space: Hopes and Issues.

On October 4, the Astronomy and Space Department of the Moscow State Department for Youth Creativity conducted a "Debates on Space" series of meetings of more than 150 Moscow high-school students with scientists and experts from space industry. Students were able to receive answers to their questions related to space exploration and received consultations from industry experts which will be utilized while conducting the project "Experiment in Space", which is run by Astronomy and Space Department for the last 2 years.

  • World Space Week was celebrated in Kaliningrad at facilities of museum of World Ocean beginning October 4. Various events, seminars, lectures and programs were held. The space communication sea vessel "Cosmonaut Victor Patsaev" presented a special exhibition, dedicated to most vivid moments in the history of Russia's cosmonautics.
  • On the evening of October 4, a meeting of 40 teams of young cosmonauts clubs took place in the Center of Youth Creativity in Novocheboksarsk, Chuvashia region. 250 students were competing in various disciplines – astronomy, history of Russian, cosmonautics, aviation and others. The Young Cosmonauts movement was initiated in the Chuvashia region last year.
  • On October 6, the "Best Young Engineer in the year" award ceremony took place. Such contests have a goal to attract young engineers into space industry and promote increasing their skills level and reaching the level of expertise required by the space industry. A report on this event is at http://rniikp.ru/ru/about/pressa/2006-10-10.htm.
  • On October 9th, a round table was held on the topic "Problems of Commercialization of space technologies on the 50th anniversary of 1st Earth Satellite" took place within the framework of the 2nd annual conference on "Priorities of scientific/technological and innovative development of the region", which was held is St. Petersburg. Discussed topics included trends of the development of space industry and prospects of space exploration.
  • On October 10-12, a Scientific-Technical Conference took place. More than 260 reports were given at 11 sections. Topics included satellite navigation systems, space telemetry, ground control centers, space communication, Earth remote sensing, new technologies in space, and search and rescue systems. More than 200 scientists and experts from space industry representing 87 enterprises and 11 Russian ministries took place in the event.
  • Several World Space Week events also took place in Russian Institute of Space Device Engineering.
