World Space Week 2004 Report
World Space Week in South Africa for the last two years has been coordinated by the National Space Science and Technology Working Group (NSSTWG), a group consisting of a number of
government departments and space mandated science bodies to promote space related issues within South Africa. During 2003, the NSSTWG adopted a "big bang" approach, with events designed and coordinated for mass
participation. Given the discussion around space and the need to raise issues around space more strategically in south Africa a different approach targeted at decision makers was adopted for 2004.
Briefly, this resulted in the launching of a space portal (www.space.gov.za), a high quality brochure targeted at decision makers being
produced, and the World Space Week website being updated for 2004. World Space Week also coincided with astronomy month which included involvement of schools and mass media. In early December a successful space
policy workshop with government decision makers involving the ISU was held in Cape Town.
