World Space Week 2005 Plans

Three Cutting Edge in Space conferences will be held and will focus on the policy and legal aspects of space. The goal of the programme is to obtain valuable information, during presentations and discussions, that would contribute towards developing the South African Space Policy

  • Pretoria:  Theme: Space Policy. Date:  3 October 2005. Venue:  The Farm Inn, Pretoria.
  • Durban: Theme: Space Awareness and Education. Date:  5 October 2005. Location: Umhlanga /Durban. Venue:  Old Mutual – MTN ScienceCentre
  • Cape Town: Theme: Space and Science. Date:  7 October 2005. Venue:  University of Cape Town, Middle Campus

Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Gauteng invites all schools to take part in an inter-schools Astronomy Quiz. Great prizes for learners and educators. Call (011) 639 8400 to book your seat!

MTN ScienCentre at Century City, Western Cape, will be hosting a series of space-related workshops for school groups: Musical Planets, Rocket Poppers and Paper Satellites! They also have excellent space exhibits, including Mark Shuttleworth's original space suit and helmet, the space shuttle simulator and an assortment of space debris. Call (021) 529 8100 for details.

Old Mutual - MTN ScienCentre in Umhlanga, KZN, will be celebrating Space Week with a Space Talk and a Simulation of a Journey into Space. Space Workshops may be available by special arrangement. Call (031) 566 8040 to find out more.

Unizul Science Centre in Richards Bay, KZN, is offering visits to their planetarium and careers centre for young space enthusiasts. Satellite-building workshops for school learners are also planned. Tel. (035) 797 3204

Sci-Bono Discovery Centre, Johannesburg, Gauteng, will be holding workshops for learners, focusing on how to launch a satellite, how a space suit works, and making your own rocket! Call (011) 832 3363

South African Schools Rocketry Challenge: Learners from selected schools in each of the nine provinces built and launched their own rockets in a competitive event coordinated by the South African High Performance Rocketry Association. A video camera rocket was also launched in each of the provinces. These videos will be collected and made available on the South African space week website in due course.

Space Teaching Materials Discussion Forums will be hosted in Durban and Cape Town by The Shuttleworth Foundation. These workshops are aimed at educators, textbook publishers and curriculum advisors. For an invitation call Vuyi (021) 970 1206.

South African version of NASA World Wind: The extremely popular Earth visualisation tool, World Wind, developed by NASA, has captivated millions of people around the world. As a special Space Week project to bring the World Wind experience into South African classrooms without good internet access, World Wind is now available as a two-CD set for distribution to South African schools and other educational institutions. The South African version includes special layers on South Africa's national parks, provincial borders, landmarks, and a 1:50,000 topographic map layer.
