World Space Week 2006 Report
Spain's celebration this year was enhanced by the International Astronautical Congress (IAC), held in Valencia during World Space Week. The impact of
this event reached a true extensive dimension, since mass media has reported about it in a number of articles, interviews, TV programmes, etc.
With the intention of reinforcing the objectives of the celebration, INTA presented the national competition for students on "50 years of space
adventure". The initiative, devoted to commemorate next year the launch of Sputnik, which gave rise to space age, was simultaneously released in major Spanish cities during WSW, with the support of governmental
agencies, industries and science museums, among other organisations.
As in previous years, some outreach activities were performed towards both media and the general public. Informative material about WSW was spread. Posters
and other printed material were distributed among schools, public locations and museums.
Sponsored by the regional government with the support of local organisations, a cycle of conferences has taken place under the generic title: Second WSW in Canary Islands. The
event was presented by Mr. Cayetano Santana, President of the Mars Society Spain, stressing the objective to keep this initiative going in the future. Lectures highlighted how space technology contributes to
saving lives, in line with the World Space Week theme.
