World Space Week 2004 Plans

Monday 4th October 2004

  • What:  6th Form Lecture Day - Current Research in Astronomy and Astrophysics
    • A series of four inspiring lectures by scientists at the forefront of current research. Programme includes: Dr. Robin Catchpole, University of Cambridge's Institute of Astronomy on, "The Universe Unveiled" and Dr. Jim Collett, University of Hertfordshire on, "Decoding messages from Space".

Tuesday 5th October 2004

  • What:  Key Stage 2 Space Discovery Day – The Earth, Moon and Stars
    • Activities with the National Space Centre and the Open University. A mobile planetarium, hands-on rocket launching and a rare chance to come face to face with some genuine moon rocks and meteorites from Mars. A model of Beagle II will also be on display. A fun day that will cover National Curriculum topics.

Wednesday 6th October 2004

  • What:  GCSE Science - Space As We Know It
    • Talks and demonstrations designed to enthral GCSE students delivered by: Cambridge University Astrophysicists on the solar system and current research; local astronomer, Sheridan Williams on Solar eclipses; and Dr. Chris Riley, producer of BBC1's next science epic "Space Odyssey" (due to be aired in November) on the making of the programme. Props from 'Space Odyssey' will also be on display.

  • What: Key Stage 3 Technology Day – Mission to Mars – Build Your Own Mars Rover
    • Using basic classroom materials, Technology Education Projects (TEP) staff will help students design and build their very own planetary rovers then test them on Bletchley Park's own 'Martian Landscape'!

  • What: INSET Day – Key Stage 2/3 Space Education
    • Anita Heward, Director of the British Festival of Space, will lead a day packed with information and hands-on ideas for teaching 'The Earth, Sun and Moon'. Anita will highlight areas of current UK space research that 7-14 years olds will find exciting and provide information on how and where to access resources.
