World Space Week 2000 Plans
Arizona
Peoria -- The Challenger Learning Center of Arizona is hosting an event on the 5th of October. Astronaut Dr. Bonnie Dunbar will be speaking.
California
Santa Clara County -- Every science teacher in the county (over 1,600 of them) are receiving World Space Week teacher kits, courtesy of Space Systems Loral. Many of the K-12 teachers will use special space-related activities to
reinforce essential science and math knowledge and skills that week.
Moffett Field -- The NASA Ames Research Center promotes the role of females in space with a webcast and Internet chat sessions on Oct. 5. There will also be other web events by NASA for World Space Week. For more information, please see quest.nasa.gov/space/events/cc
Florida
Cape Canaveral -- Launch of STS-92, a mission of the Space Shuttle Discovery to the International Space Station on Oct. 5 at 9:38 pm local time.
Indiana
Indianapolis -- Historic first public viewing of Liberty 7, the Project Mercury capsule that spent nearly 40 years on the ocean

Lafayette -- Special exhibit at Lafayette Natural History Museum & Planetarium. The display for World Space Week/La Semaine de la
Science is called "Sun under Surveillance." It will be about solar research by ESA spacecraft and French observatories, using images and information supplied to us by CNES, the Centre National
d'Etudes Spatiales. The labels will be in both French and English
Maryland
Greenbelt and Surround Communities -- An estimated 100 science teachers plan to use space activities in the classroom using World Space Week Teacher Kits provided by Honeywell Technical Solutions and the Goddard Alliance.
New Jersey
Newark -- "Night Skies: The Art of Deep Space," an exhibition of astronomical photography by David Malin, opens October 11 at the Newark Museum. Dr.
Malin will give a lecture in the Johnson Auditorium at 6:00 p.m. A reception and book signing will follow.
New York
New York City -- October 4 -- Official global launch of World Space Week at United Nations Headquarters. Click here for program. The agenda for the 10 am - 1 pm event includes a panel of astronauts and cosmonauts, and presentations on
uses of space in disaster management and telemedicine. The Planetary Society will sponsor the final half-hour segment of the program with a Student Press Conference for middle and high school students from
New York schools. Bill Nye "the Science Guy" will take questions directly from the student audience. If you would like to attend, please contact oosa@unvienna.org before 15 September. Seats are free, but seating is limited.
New York City -- October 4 -- Evening public lectures at Hayden Planetarium cosponsored by the Planetary Society. Speakers include Bill Nye, Adriana Ocampo, and Neil Tyson.

Dayton -- Boonshoft Museum of Discovery will offer an afternoon of teacher hands-on astronomy classroom activity demonstrations on Sunday 8 October, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. We will be utilizing our Starlab to share some basic night sky observing activities. We will be providing web site listings for astronomy activity sites. Any teacher will be admitted free of charge as long as they provide proof of their teaching position. Clear Lake -- Hundreds of teachers around the NASA Johnson Space Center will be featuring space in the classroom using the World Space Week Teacher Kit, thanks to the United Space Alliance and Hernandez Engineering.
Lubbock -- October 4-8 -- An appearance by NASA Astronaut Dr. Bonnie Dunbar highlights the Museum of Texas Tech University's extensive celebration of World Space Week.
