World Space Week 2001 Plans & Reports
General
NASA Quest -- Aligning with the 2001 World Space Week collaborative, NASA Quest, the premier online site for interactive math, science, technology and space mentoring will host interactive video webcasts, textbased webchats, audio and video clips, and forums. NASA invites you to interact with our nation's coolest, brightest, most intriguing and talented women and men who develop and utilize breakthrough technologies that benefit our world!
GLOBE and CloudSAT -- NASA's CloudSat Mission participated in World Space Week. Principal Investigator Graeme Stephens of Colorado State University and Deputy P.I. Deborah Vane of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, with the assistance of CloudSat outreach coordinator Debra Krumm (also CSU), enthusiastically participated in the GLOBE-sponsored web chat on clouds on October 4th, 2001.
Sputnik Book -- Launching on October 4, 2001, the anniversary of Sputnik, is the new book "Sputnik: The Shock of the Century" by Walker & Company.
California
Santa Clara County -- Every science teacher in the county (approx. 1,700 teachers) are receiving World Space Week Teacher Kits, courtesy of Space Sysems Loral. These materials will help the teachers use space to excite students about
learning during World Space Week.
Los Angeles – Space enthusiasts will watch the IMAX movie "Blue Planet" at the California Science Center, 700 State Drive, Los Angeles, Friday Oct 5th, 2001 6pm. Meet our greeters at the front door for a 1$ off coupon. Join us afterward for a social hour to meet recent additions to the L.A. area, learn about ways to be a part of the action in L.A., and generally do what we love- talk about space! District of Columbia
- Washington -- Space Adventures is planning a small VIP World Space Week event in Washington DC, a reception on the USS Sequoia Presidential Yacht. We are planning to invite government and industry leaders. For information, please see www.spaceadventures.com.
Florida
Brevard County -- To help launch World Space Week, the Miracle City Mall on September 28-30 hosts SpaceFest 2001. This is a free, educational public event that celebrates space technology. The festival includes special activities for grade school children, young teens, the college bound, adults and retired space workers. SpaceFest 2001 shows kids how exciting and challenging space sciences has become while adults discover the worldwide impact of mankind's exploration of the universe.
Iowa
Statewide -- The Iowa Space Grant Consortium (ISGC), in partnership with WHO Radio (1040 AM) and the Earth & Sky Radio Program announces The Space Week Science Challenge, October 4-10, 2001. The winning classroom will receive a Meade ETX Astro telescope and tripod, a trip to the Science Station and IMAX Dome Theatre in Cedar Rapids, an inservice program from the Extension - Science Engineering and Technology (E-SET) team, and a collection of great curriculum materials. The total prize package could be worth $5,000. Any classroom of students in any grade level from K-12th grade, attending a charter, public, private, religious, or home school in Iowa is eligible.

- Hundreds of teachers in Prince George's County, home of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, will participate in World Space Week this year. The teachers are receiving
World Space Week Teacher Kits from a coalition of organizations including the Goddard Alliance and Prince George's Tech Council.
Nevada
Spring Creek -- Northeastern Nevada, the site of the largest gold producing area in the US, will host an event on the use of gold in space exploration, "Gold Goes Into Space." The local museum, the tri-county public library system, the local school system, and the three major gold mining companies will participate. We are working to develop static displays for the libraries and the museum, plus live presentations to teachers and the public.
Ohio
Cleveland -- The NASA John H. Glenn Research Center Visitor Center is planning events as part of World Space Week.
Tennessee
Brentwood -- Esoterix Oncology, a laboratory that specializes in cancer studies, held a contest for employees. Each day during World Space Week, questions about space were posted for employees to answer. Winners received prizes such a movie tickets.
