This organization began promoting Spaceweek, a celebration of the first Moon landing, each July. In 1980, its celebration in Houston was led by Ernie Hillje, Troy Welch, David Koch, and Dennis Stone
(left to right in the photo). They formed Spaceweek National Headquarters in 1981 to organize a nationwide celebration. Spaceweek spread to over 15 nations by 1999, when the UN General Assembly
declared World Space Week.
Today, World Space Week Association with leadership from around the globe, proudly supports the UN in the global coordination of World Space Week, each October 4-10.
The timeline above depicts the evolution of the name of the event and the name of the organization.
