Event Name: | Statement to UN bodies, governments, and NGOs in support of peaceful uses of outer space |
Event Description: | During World Space Week, on October 8, WILPF plans to issue a statement from its office in Geneva supporting the 1957 Outer Space Treaty on the peaceful uses of outer space. It will call on the United States and Israel, the only nations to vote NO or abstain in the annual General Assembly vote on Prevention of an Arm race in Outer Space (PAROS), to join in the global effort to keep space for peace. |

Report on the Results: | The WILPF statement (at http://www.wilpf.int.ch/statements/2008space4peace.html)pointed out the dangers to peaceful uses of outer space posed by Chinese and U.S. anti-satellite tests, by proposed missile defense installations in Poland and the Czech Republic, and by attempts to dominate space militarily by the U.S. or any nation. It welcomed the draft treaty on prevention of weaponization of outer space presented by China and Russia which, though not answering to all the problems raised by other nations, at least offers a basis for negotiation. WILPF calls on the Conference on Disarmament at the UN in Geneva to end their twelve year deadlock and to begin serious discussions on that draft and/or other draft texts with a view to establishing an ad hoc committee to negotiate such a treaty within the CD.,0,0,NULL |
