Zero Gravity Interiors is an exploration into the design of commercial manned space vehicles. With ‘space tourism’ becoming an ever-closer reality, thanks to companies like Richard Branson’s Virgin Galaxy and Elon Musk’s Space X, there is a growing demand for designers to respond to this unique and challenging sector.
The brief for this Live Project is to design a new space faring capsule for commercial use. The capsule can either be suitable for mounting on top of a rocket or for use with a high-altitude balloon.
Students will work in teams (2-3 per group) to design a concept proposal for a new space capsule. Consideration should be given to the practical requirements but also the aesthetics – this is the most expensive form of transport and as such your Clients will be expecting the highest quality experience. You should demonstrate an understanding of how zero gravity will affect the experience and how the capsule will need to respond and aid the customer’s actions to maximise their enjoyment and comfort. Things to consider:
• Take-off position and experience
• Zero gravity experience
• Orientation
• Materials
