Event Name:  Closer to the planets through science, art and fiction
Event Description:  Step 1: The students are familiarized with the name and the position of the planets from our solar system by means of a song that the students are going to learn. The lines of the song with their rhyme are an efficient mnemotechnic meant to acquire new information. – 10 min. Step 2: The students will act in a short theatre play, based on the following script: a student – narrator tells the audience the plot of Stephen Hawkins’ book George and the Big-bang, in which a boy, called George, receives as a birthday present from his grandmother a pig, whose name is Freddy. The boy has to find a place in the universe for Freddy where it can live happily. Together with his friend, Annie, and the computer Cosmos, the boy goes through wonderful adventures, travelling through the Universe, in unknown galaxies, about whom he learns a lot of things. – 5 min.   Step 3: 9 students go on the stage, each of whom representing a planet, as well as the sun of our solar system. They are going to wear costumes – previously made – which are supposed to suggest a planet. “The Sun” will be placed in a central position and it will introduce itself in an original but documented way, describing the characteristics of the star it embodies. The other students will introduce themselves too, placing themselves around the Sun. (the students had to get information about the planets as homework) – 15 min.   Step 4: The students in the audince get a handout with items of scientific and mathematical description of each planet presented by their colleagues. The students get also drawings with Freddy the pig in different situations, according to the planet  it should live on (the windy pig, the airy pig, the fried pig etc.), drawings that they have to match with the right planet. – 10 min.   Step 5: In the end, there will be a surprise for the students: the planets studied will be printed at the 3D printer of the school. The students are observants of the printing process. -10 – 20 min.
