Report on the Results:  The Astrobiology Network of Pakistan (ABNP), in collaboration with Khwarizmi Science Society (KSS) and Lahore Astronomical Society (LAST), celebrates World Space Week 2018 at Forman Christian College University Lahore, Pakistan. October 8, 2018 World Space Week is the annual, international celebration of the launch of first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik-1. It is celebrated worldwide from October 4th to 10th. This year, the Astrobiology Network of Pakistan (ABNP) collaborated with the intermediate and undergraduate student Physics societies at Forman Christian College University, Lahore Astronomical Society (LAST) and Khwarizmi Science Society (KSS) to organize a day full of talks and a planetary observation to follow. Syed Muneeb Ali, General Secretary of ABNP opened the floor, introduced all the partner societies and laid down the schedule of talks for the day. The first talk was delivered by Dr. Zubair Khalid from KSS, who spoke about his research on cosmic microwave background radiation. He spoke about results obtained through data analysis of the data collected by CoBE, WMAP and Planck spacecrafts. Major discoveries included red shift and changing frequencies, the movement of photons and their discovery, and temperature shift in photons in the universe. This technical talk took us on a journey back in time to the beginning of the universe. Mr. RoshaanBukhari from LAST spoke about the possibility and probability of the existence extraterrestrial life. Ms. Ayesha Saeed, a student of M. Phil Biotechnology at FCC, felt that his talk was very engaging and entertaining. As a biotech student, she did not have difficulty understanding some of the more technical concepts. She said that ‘the talk really catered to laymen in the audience’. Ms. Sidra Ramzanfrom ABNP showed and explained aneducational video about the evolution of the Universe starting from the Big Bang to the present day. It also covered topics of cosmology including the fate of the universe. Ms. RabeeaRasheed and Ms. YumnaMajeedspoke about the colonization of Mars. They discussed why humankind intends to send manned missions to Mars and the conditions that are required for human life to sustain on Mars such as, availability of water, biosphere and energy. Dr. Monas Shahzad, who is the Chairperson of the Physics Department at FCCU said that, “events such as this one are necessary not just to inspire physicists but also to incite curiosity among us all”. The event concluded with a telescopic observation in FCCU main ground. The planets Mars, Jupiter and Saturn were observed through a variety of telescopes. Observers got the opportunity to capture these celestial wonders with their mobile cameras. Over 200 students and astronomy and space enthusiasts attended the event. The Astrobiology Network of Pakistan was founded by Dr. NozairKhwaja in 2017. It is a network of multidisciplinary scientists aimed to create awareness of astrobiology and astronomy among the general public in Pakistan.
