Stevenage Celebrates World Space Week
Event Description:
STEVENAGE schools and businesses, including Astrium, will celebrate World Space Week at the Business & Technology Centre (btc) in Stevenage from 6th to 8th October . With its involvement in space dating back to the early 1950s, Stevenage is widely known as the home of the UK Space Industry and so it really does have something to celebrate!
More than 500 students from local primary and secondary schools will enjoy a short play on the impact of space in everyday life and take part in fun, practical space challenges lead by space scientists and engineers. They will also visit an exhibition of the work done by local organisations, some based at the btc, and meet Bruno, the prototype Mars Rover being developed by Astrium. The University of Hertfordshire and North Hertfordshire College will be on hand alongside a number of local companies to discuss Higher Education and careers opportunities in the space sector.
At a 'Book-Signing' on the evening of Wednesday 6 Oct, sponsored by Waterstones, Professor Colin Pillinger, best known as leader of the Beagle 2 Project, will give a presentation on his new book ‘My Life on Mars’ and on the Thursday evening a celebrity will give an 'inspirational lecture' to a sixth form audience.
The event is being actively supported by Stevenage Borough Council, the Business & Technology Centre and SETpoint Hertfordshire
