Report on the Results:  October 13, 2007: The Tucson Arizona WILPF Branch sponsored a public meeting in support of the International Keep Space for Peace Week. The branch showed the film Arsenal of Hypocrisy on the genesis and dangers of the rapidly expanding US space militarization program. This was followed by a short talk by Jack Cohen-Joppa, who contextualized the issue within the community of Tucson, which is the home of Raytheon Missile Production Facility. Raytheon is working on several missile defense contracts, including the Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicle. Twenty-five people attended, including some new to the issues. The group engaged in meaningful and probing discussion, and the branch distributed post cards to the audience for distribution to their elected officials, urging those officials to stop funding Star Wars technology. Following this program, Tucson WILPF held protest demonstrations at Davis Monthan Air Force Base (October 26) and at Raytheon (October 30). Davis Monthan trains the A-10 fighters who have used depleted uranium (DU) in Iraq. The protestors carried signs asking the pilots to tell them where DU has been used, as the US has never officially declared its use. The connection to the militarization of space is that the US uses its vast space assets both to identify targets in Iraq and to guide the pilots and the bombs they drop. Raytheon is the fourth largest US military contractor, and the corporation and its investors profit handsomely from development of missiles and military space technology, paid for by US tax dollars. WILPF is deeply concerned about the promotion of war for profit by multinational corporations and their investors, especially by those, like Raytheon, which promote and profit from space militarization and the nuclear weapons industry. Tucson WILPF has contributed extensively to research on these corporations.
