| Report on the Results: | October 2-4, 2007: Washington D.C. A member of Portland WILPF visited offices of all seven members of the Oregon delegation to urge them to support the existing Outer Space Treaty and to promote compliance with space law rather than space warfare. Constructive meetings were held with foreign policy staff of Senator Ron Wyden and Senator Gordon Smith, as well as with legislative aides of Representatives Wu, Blumenauer, and Greg Walden. She delivered the letter from Portland WILPF signed by the co-Presidents. It called for an end to an offensive space program and for House members urge support of H Res 68 which calls on the President to cooperate with the UN treaty system and help lead the world toward abolition of nuclear weapons and an end to space militarization. Following this visit, in early November, copies of the Geneva WILPF statement to United Nations member states and delegates issued October 4 in support of the Outer Space Treaty were hand delivered by WILPF to forty additional Congressional offices along with other supporting materials. Previous to World Space Week, in September, Keep Space for Peace posters were hand delivered to 60 House offices with active WILPF constituents, along with materials calling for support of H Res 68. There were also individual meetings with staff and some legislators. |
