Event Name: | Visualising a Life On Mars |
Event Description: | The Visualising a Life on Mars (VALOM) challenge will draw together the creative heritage and endeavours of people from throughout the ages who have visualised space travel through painting, drawings, comic books, films, stories or poetry, with the recent international interest in traveling to, and setting up settlements on Mars. 170 x yr 7 students (11-year olds) at Ellesmere Port Catholic High School will be set the challenge of visualising and sharing what they feel it would be like to travel to and live on Mars. This could be shared through a poem, painting, poster, drawing, cartoon, model, animation, photomontage, short film, or music. The VALOM programme will also involve the students taking part in a series of interactive webinars with both professionals from the space industry and artists and designers for whom space travel has been an inspiration for their work. The VALOM workshops and webinars will run every two weeks until the 22nd January 2021. To celebrate World Space Week, artist Steve Salmon, from the British Interplanetary Society will be joining the students for a webinar on Friday the 9th October. Steve will talk to the students about how space has inspired his own artwork and how different artists have, through their work, visualised travel through space and life on a planet such as Mars. Steve will also talk to the students about how creative qualities and skills are valued across the space sector. |

All of these young people were self-isolating for two weeks at home after being sent home by there school 2 days before the event. In the webinar, artist Steve Salmon, a fellow of the British Interplanetary Society, was interviewed by Mark Waters from 4wardfutures, about his work, his inspirations, opportunities for creative young people in the space sector and advice he would give young creatives. |
