Report on the Results:  Final Report of Space & Sustainability Fest (World Space Week 2022) by Team LIFE- To & Beyond & Partners. "A Festival where diversity is celebrated & everyone is united by Space" Space & Sustainability Fest was one of its kind Mega Outreach Fest organized by Team LIFE- To & Beyond & Partners to celebrate World Space Week 2022 on the theme of Space & Sustainability. From experts to guest talks, from volunteers to special guest talks, from fest attendees to event hosts & coordinators this fest encourages inclusion & diversity. Engaging talks, special sessions, a panel discussion, a workshop, a social media contest, multilingual science communication, networking, and above all celebration of Space & Sustainability. We endeavored to host around 30 speakers from 6 continents across the globe online. We also received online participation from listeners across the globe. More than 700 minutes of celebration of Space & Sustainability for 8 days from 4th Oct to 10th Oct 2022 and an associated session in Hindi on 13th Oct 2022. Why was this fest important? There were 3 main objectives to organize this fest: 1. Celebrating World Space week; 2. Fueling discussions on Sustainability in Space & Sustainability from Space and many more; 3. To lead by work and not just by word, that ‘Sustainability’ can be achieved by organizing a Sustainable Event too. Celebrating World Space Week [1,2] What is World Space Week? World Space Week is an international celebration of science and technology and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition. The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1999 that World Space Week will be held each year from October 4-10. These dates commemorate two events: • October 4, 1957: Launch of the first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, thus opening the way for space exploration • October 10, 1967: The signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies. Where and how is World Space Week celebrated? World Space Week consists of space education and outreach events held by space agencies, aerospace companies, schools, planetaria, museums, and astronomy clubs around the world in a common timeframe. These synchronized space events attract greater public and media attention. What are the goals of World Space Week? • Provide unique leverage in space outreach and education • Educate people around the world about the benefits that they receive from space • Encourage greater use of space for sustainable economic development • Demonstrate public support for space programs • Excite young people about science, technology, engineering, and math • Foster international cooperation in space outreach and education What is the theme of World Space Week 2022? Each year, the World Space Week Association (WSWA) selects a theme for the upcoming World Space Week (WSW) to provide a focus on the activities and events that take a place throughout the world, during 4-10 October. The World Space Week 2022 theme is “Space and Sustainability.” During October 4-10, 2022 WSW will celebrate two branches of the topic to be covered-achieving sustainability in space, and achieving sustainability from space. The theme is inspired by how sustainability in space relates to how humanity uses space, most pressingly, the orbital area surrounding Earth itself a finite resource. To celebrate the same Team LIFE- To & Beyond proposed this event and implemented it with the support of Partners with due respect to the guidelines provided by World Space Week Association. We aligned our thoughts and work with the theme suggested for celebrating World Space Week 2022. The next point should be how we thought out this event and implemented it to have an impact on society in promoting Space exploration and exploitation to achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Fueling discussions on Sustainability in Space & Sustainability from Space and many more[3] There were 5 parts to this Fest: • Engaging Talks on the topics of Sustainability in Space; • Engaging Talks on the topics of Sustainability from Space; • Space for achieving UN’s Sustainable Development Goal No. 10 i.e. Reduced Inequalities; • Social Media Contest (How Space Sector can help tackle Earth’s problems?); • Space for Rural children (in the Hindi language). All of these 5 parts together endeavored to fuel thinking and discussions on Space & Sustainability among the attendees. How was Space & Sustainability Fest a Sustainable Fest? (leading by work and not just by word) United Nations declared a special International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development. Even the theme for WorldSpaceWeek2022 for this year was 'Space & Sustainability. Many events and discussions are being conducted across the globe on the theme of sustainability. But how about an Event i.e. Sustainable in itself and celebrates Sustainability at the same time? So, it will not only lead by word but also by work. We were humbled enough to host an event that can be considered in the category of a Sustainable Event. Space & Sustainability Fest organized by Team LIFE - To & Beyond in partnership with InnovaSpace (SpaceCrew), BEYOND SC!ENCE MAGAZINE, AstroCapsule, and Pehal Foundation. But on what grounds do we call it a Sustainably planned and implemented Event? Let us brief about it a bit, Firstly we registered our Fest at the website of World Space Week Association. Secondly, when speaking about Sustainability the 17 goals listed by United Nations come in very handy. a) UN SDG No. 1,2,3,6,7,8,13,14, and 15 were covered in detailed quality discussion under the theme of Sustainability From Space at the Fest. Perhaps this has instilled the core values of Sustainability in the mind of the attendees. b) UN SDG No. 4 i.e. Quality Education has been at the very foundation of this Fest to spread the word and get the common thinking about Space & Sustainability. c) UN SDG No. 5 i.e. Gender Equality was emphasized in the planning of this event. 10 Female speakers out of 37 were hosted at this Fest and a focussed discussion on LGBTQ+ in Space by one of the speakers. d) UN SDG No. 9, 11, and 12 were at the very foundation of the Space & Sustainability Fest both in thought & implementation. UN SDG No. 9 i.e. Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. Perhaps hosting 37 speakers from 6 continents across the globe is not a matter of joke and also gaining a maximum inclusion of attendees at the sessions was expected. Therefore, as we have learned from the Pandemic 'Online' would be the best mode to sustainably conduct this event. So was Space & Sustainability Fest held in Online Mode. UN SDG No. 10 i.e. Sustainable cities & communities and UN SDG No. 11 i.e. Sustainable Consumption & Production were implemented too. We are proud to acknowledge not a single penny was spent on organizing this Mega Fest. We are grateful to our partners and attendees for their cooperation and support. We also are grateful to Astrocapsule for the Premium G-Meet platform support. Our Speakers were kind enough not to ask for anything in return rather we did try our best to give due recognition to them for their efforts So with the responsible usage of the already available electronic devices (being a part of a Sustainable community), some graphic designing skills, using google drive and forms, and everyone's support, we could do so much. SO, JUST THINK OF THE POSSIBILITIES. e) UN SDG No. 10 i.e. Reduced Inequalities was implemented in the most unique way at this Fest. We had the following parameters considering which we tried to minimize Inequalities among ourselves. Gender: discussed earlier in point c. Language: Multiple Language ScicComm. A 2-hour event in Hindi has been conducted on 13th Oct 2022 for rural children in collaboration between LIFE- To & Beyond and Pehal Foundation. Topics- Astrobiology/खगोल जीव ववज्ञान, Life In Space/ अंतरिक्ष मेंजीवन, and Space & Sustainability/ अंतरिक्ष औि सतत ववकास. Region: We hosted speakers from 6 continents across the globe with 21/37 speakers from India, 4/37 speakers from the USA, and each speaker from China, Pakistan, Australia, Lebanon, Turkey, Brazil, Nigeria, Austria, Netherlands, and the UK. Field Of Expertise: From Sciences to Arts, all were covered in the sessions and inclusively celebrate Space & Sustainability. Age Group: We had two special sessions on Astrobiology for Kids & Parents, an Art Workshop for Adults, and a Panel discussion for the Youth In Space Sector. Inclusion: Through SOCIAL MEDIA CONTEST & ART. Space For Less Represented Communities: Space for Specially-Abled, Space for the Tribal Communities, Space For Africa. f) UN_SDG No. 16 i.e Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions & UN_SDG No. 17 i.e. Partnerships for Goals. Education is the most peaceful endeavor by Humanity. That's what we tried to do through this Mega Fest. Partnerships with LIFE - To & Beyond, InnovaSpace, AstroCapsule, BEYOND SC!ENCE MAGAZINE, Pehal Foundation, and the cooperative participation of Speakers, Volunteers, the attendees helped in the smooth implementation of the Fest. Thus, on the basis of the aforementioned considerations, we call Space & Sustainability Fest (WSW2022) a Sustainably thought and Sustainably implemented Fest. Q.E.D. Links: https://www.instagram.com/p/CjVtgLfBgag/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link https://www.instagram.com/p/CjknnP0Lc1w/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link Our initiative was welcomed by the World Space Week India coordinating committee. Also, World Space week was kind enough to share some of our fest updates on their Instagram story and collaborate on some of our Instagram Posts that were related to our Fest. Our Partners and speakers (from professionals to volunteers) also proudly contributed to some supporting content that helps spread the word about the Fest. • Verbal feedback from a few attendees of Space & Sustainability Fest (hyperlinked) Limitations of Raw data (of Responses from participants): While we are elated about the success of our humble Fest and the applauds it received from many individuals and organizations we also regret the limitations associated with the accurate analysis of the Raw data related to the media impressions and engagements and also the attendee participation in a very short time after Fest implementation accepting the fact that we are not well versed with Analytics. We will surely require time to prepare a detailed and more accurate Final report of the Fest with refined data analysis. However, we tried our best to give an approximation of the analysis we did, using the raw data. Conclusion The various ideas or points in this post-event report are extracted from the data analysis of raw data related to the Fest. Besides the data, we are truly grateful to all who have been involved in the planning, supporting, and implementation of this Mega Fest. We firmly tried to uphold Space and its importance in Society and how Sustainability can be achieved in Space and on Earth too. This was certainly a strong step to generate awareness. We not only endeavored to lead by word by also by work. This wouldn’t have been possible without the help and support from Team LIFE- To & Beyond, World Space Week (Global & India), and partners. Lastly, we also extend our gratefulness to our coordinators, hosts, speakers, back-end team, and those who attended and engaged in this festival that strived to achieve Space & Sustainability of All, for All, and by All.
