Event Name: | Festival of Astronomy and Space - Festival Keynote Talk - When Galaxies Collide |
Event Description: | What happens if you throw two galaxies at each other? One of the most dramatic events galaxies undergo is collisions. They can cause bursts of star formation, ignite the central engine, and is ultimately how galaxies grow. In this presentation I will talk about how galaxies evolve over billions of years, focusing on these dramatic episodes. Rebecca is a Research Fellow in the Centre for Astrophysics at UniSQ. She uses large international telescopes and galaxy observation data to see how active galaxies work and what happens when they collide. |
