Event Name: | Launch and Celebration of the World Space Week |
Event Description: | 04th October, 1530 hrs Launch of the World Space Week and public lecture by the European Space Agency Astronaut, Prof. Christer Fuglesang. 07th October, 1430 hrs Outreach and Celebration of the World Space Week at one of the Kgaswe high school in Palapye. Activities will include talks, solar observation and telescope demonstration. 08th October, 1430 hrs Outreach and Celebration of the World Space Week at Sedimo Junior School in Mogapi village. Activities will include talks, solar observation using an optical telescope, and a telescope donation for the school to start a Space Science club. |

Report on the Results: | The university, through both the AVN/SKA Botswana and BOTSAT-1 Projects celebrated the World Space Week which is the largest space event for the first time. The launch of this year’s event was on the 4th of October 2024 in BIUST where the university had the honor of hosting the Swedish Astronaut, Professor Christer Fuglesang who gave a public lecture to an audience of about 200 people and this included the university staff and students, students from local junior schools and the general public. As part of this year’s event, the university also planned some activities around schools in Palapye and surrounding areas. The activities were planned for Kgaswe High School on the 7 th of October and Sedimo JSS in Mogapi on the 8 th of October 2024. As the goal of the World Space Week is also to excite young people about STEM, the planned activities included presentations to students by both the SKA/AVN and BotSat-1 projects and other activities to commemorate the World Space Week like Solar observations and Telescope demonstrations. In Kgaswe High school the event was attended by around 50 students and 10 teachers. At Sedimo Junior school the event was attended by 69 students and 11 teachers, as part of the celebrations at Sedimo Junior school, 2 telescopes were donated to the school to start a space science club. |
