Event Name: | The Geometry of the Universe: Measurements and Mysteries of the Sky |
Event Description: | This activity can explore how mathematics, particularly geometry and trigonometry, is used to understand the structures and distances in outer space. Participants could calculate the relative sizes of planets or distances between stars, using mathematical methods applied in astronomy, such as stellar parallax. This would stimulate critical thinking and demonstrate the direct connection between the two fields. |

Report on the Results: | The activity "Geometry of the Universe: Measurements and the Mysteries of the Sky," conducted with students from classes 7C and 7D, aimed to deepen their understanding of geometry concepts through exploring their applications in astronomy. Students were introduced to the fascinating world of astronomical measurements, learning about how distances between celestial bodies are determined and about the principle of parallax. Through interactive activities and practical exercises, students had the opportunity to apply Thales' theorem and other geometric concepts to estimate distances and dimensions in space. A highlight of the activity was the simulation of the measurements used by ancient astronomers to calculate the distance between Earth and the Sun. Students were encouraged to think critically and discuss the challenges faced by scientists in ancient times when the available tools were limited. The activity concluded with a Q&A session, where students expressed their curiosities about the universe and shared their hypotheses. Through this experience, they discovered the close connection between geometry and the exploration of cosmic space, developing both their mathematical knowledge and their passion for astronomy. |
