Event Description:  October 5th Professor Tom Ray, from the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) "The Einstein Lens and a Tale of Two Eclipses” Celebrating Einstein Through 100 Years of General Relativity and World Space week 2015 Albert Einstein is probably the most well-known scientific genius. His creative ability allowed him to dream of new physics and create scientific revolutions, including his masterpiece, the theory of general relativity that is the prevailing, modern theory of gravity. It describes the motion of all large-scale objects, including stars, planets, and galaxies while people around the globe instantly recognize Einstein's image, many in the public still have not had an occasion to learn some of the astonishing details and amazing implications of his most monumental discovery of 1915. The talk will examine the two expeditions that tested the theory that starlight could bent by a gravitational field during the 1919 solar eclipse from West Africa by Cambridge Astronomer Arthur Eddington.
