From our first satellite called Sputnik in 1957 to the satellites that bring us Sirius/XM and Dish Network, space brings us great pride and utility but only at tremendous effort. At least that's how the incumbents think. It's against this backdrop that a new wave of space startups, including Skybox Imaging, Spire Global, and Virgin Galactic, have come onto the scene. This new renaissance of space companies is shaking up the industry by building and launching satellites for 1/1000th the cost ($700,000 instead of $700,000,000). They are questioning some core assumptions in the aerospace industry and leveraging best practices from tech startups. Along the way, they've attracted the attention of mainstream tech companies (Google purchased Skybox Imaging for $500M in 2014). ----- Location: Computer History Museum, 1401 N Shoreline Blvd, Mountain View, CA 94043; (650) 810-1010; http://www.computerhistory.org/
