| Event Description: | Way4Space organizes an annual event, NEXTSPACE, that brings together French, European and international managers and experts around a theme of interest for its research activity. In 2025, our focus will be on ‘Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO): the challenges of the new low-Earth frontier in space’, a rapidly emerging field of technological, scientific and strategic exploration. Located between 80 and 300 kilometers in altitude, very low and ultra-low Earth orbits (VLEO/ULEO) represent a promising new frontier in space exploration, but also a source of considerable complexity. These orbits offer major opportunities for technological, scientific, and industrial innovation, while also raising numerous legal, geopolitical, ethical, and environmental challenges. With dual-use potential, they provide significant capabilities for both civilian and military applications, such as high-resolution multispectral Earth observation and low-latency communications. In the field of defense, they open the door to new modes of action that combine responsiveness and discretion. Moreover, they contribute to a more sustainable use of near-Earth space by reducing the persistence of orbital debris. However, beyond these operational considerations, VLEO/ULEO orbits challenge the boundary between airspace and outer space, effectively redefine power dynamics, and raise questions about international norms—thus calling for a strategic reflection on their regulation and future. This is precisely what we aim to explore during our symposium. |
