Event Name: | Living in Space with the Little Prince |
Event Description: | For World Space Week, our students are taking part in a cross-curricular project inspired by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s timeless story The Little Prince. The project connects literature, mathematics, geography, and science under the theme of life in space, encouraging creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration. In Croatian language and literature (Paula Grabovac, Croatian language and literature teacher), pupils read and discuss The Little Prince, focusing on its characters, messages, and values. They write letters to the Little Prince and create short stories such as “The Little Prince Visits My Planet”, linking imagination with reflection on friendship, knowledge, and responsibility. In mathematics (Anita Šimac, mathematics teacher), students apply their skills to space contexts by calculating the surface area and volume of their imagined planets, plotting orbits as circles or ellipses, and preparing statistical charts to show population and resource use. They also design mathematical challenges about sustainable living in space. In geography (Renata Cvetkoski, teacher) and science, pupils learn about the position and movement of celestial bodies, study constellations, and explore the conditions required for survival in space — gravity, oxygen, water, temperature, and energy. They discuss sustainability and technology in space exploration, taking inspiration from the International Space Station, the Moon, and Mars. Working in groups, each team invents its own planet: they design its environment, inhabitants, and values, give it a name and a symbol, and present their world through posters, models, or digital presentations. Finally, all creations are displayed in a “Gallery of Planets” exhibition at school, where students share their visions of space life with their peers and community. This project brings together imagination and science, showing pupils that exploring the universe is not only about technology, but also about human values and sustainable living. |
