Statement of World Space Week Association

In the light of World Space Week and its 2021 theme “Women in Space”, World Space Week Association expresses deep concern about unfair acts against women. We strongly condemn all acts of harassment, misconduct, prejudice, or discrimination against all people on the basis of gender, age, race, nationality, or beliefs.

Space is a global community and must be open and accessible for all who desire to be part of it. Our industry needs the strength and wisdom that can only come from diversity and inclusion.  As we work together this week to inspire women and girls to study STEAM and pursue space careers, we ask the world space community to recommit to these important principles and to rigorously enforce them in all its activities. In keeping with the “Women in Space” theme, we encourage the space community to act and ensure that our sector becomes more inclusive and safe for everyone.

We recently learned about alleged sexual misconduct by Dr. Chris Welch, who is a member of our Board of Directors. While the Association’s Board of Directors considers the matter and until its resolution, he will not take part in the activities of the Board and the Association.

We wish Ms. Holland to find the strength to heal, and ask Dr. Welch to undertake the necessary constructive actions that will aid possible reconciliation.
