| Event Description: | The World Space Week is an international celebration on the contribution of the space science and technology for the betterment of the human condition. The principle of sustainability applied to a lesser or larger scale must be ecologically correct, economically viable, socially just and culturally diverse. Excessive lighting of night skies affects the human circadian rhythms, affects dramatically natural migration processes, reproduction, feeding, jeopardizing the survival of some nocturnal species, and therefore, darkness is just as important as daylight. About 30% of vertebrates and 60% of invertebrates are nocturnal species. Artificial light at night is associated with public safety, but might be reduced in the right place at the right time, taking place, in most cases, a waste of energy, being known that on a global scale, 19% of the consumed energy is used in public lighting night. Symbolically and as a form of awareness for this theme, the Municipality of Lamego, between the 4th and the 10th of October, will keep the outside lights off of some municipal facilities. Although humans are the greatest threat to wildlife, we are also their only hope. |
