Event Description:  Lewis & Clark IB Middle School will hold the Space Celebration and Race Through Space 5K Run/Walk on October 8th from 6pm to 8pm in recognition of World Space Week. This is a school-wide endeavor to promote STEM in school and the community that will consist of a student scaled model competition of ISS modules and the Mars Curiosity rover, student-created STEM activities for the community, and a 5K “under the stars" run/walk with “planetary waypoints” along the course. The Omaha Astronomical Society will provide volunteers and telescopes for public star (and sun) gazing. The UNO Planetarium will provide Buy One, Get One Free passes to its planetarium (year-long activity). The Nebraska Space Grant will provide space-themed door prizes. And, UNO Noyce Scholars will provide information on student activities for, and instructions on how to safely view, the 2017 solar eclipse that will traverse Nebraska.

Report on the Results:  With perfect weather and clear skies, everyone - toddlers, children, parents, and grandparents - enjoyed sun gazing, viewing of Venus and Mars, and stunning details of the surface of the Moon and the rings of Saturn! The Omaha Astronomical Society actively engaged attendees in conversations about the wonders of space. UNO Noyce Scholars challenged students (and parents) to solve space-related math problems for which they received a NASA tote bag filled with "goodies" provided by the Nebraska Space Grant. Attendees also learned about solar eclipses and how to safely view the "big one" that will traverse Nebraska on August 21, 2017! The night ended with Lewis & Clark students and staff hosting their annual 5K Run/Walk themed "Race Through Space". Runners/Walkers visited student-created activities and information "stations" along 5K route in the dark in glow-in-the-dark shirts and glow sticks. Each station represented a solar system planet (and Pluto!). Also, attendees were treated to an indoor display of students' scale model projects of the International Space Station and Mars rover. Attendees and participating groups all began talk of "next year"! So, here's to seeing everyone in the Omaha metro area on Saturday, October 7, 2017!!!!
