Event Name: | 2017 Festival of Astronomy & Space |
Event Description: | The University of Southern Queensland’s Festival of Astronomy and Space is a free program, open to all, with a series of evening talks about the wonders of the universe. We are delighted to host internationally recognised speakers such as Professor Giovanna Tinetti (University College London) and NASA Astronomer Dr Doug Hudgins, as well as Professor Tamara Davis (University of Queensland) and Professor Fred Watson (Australian Astronomical Observatory). Over the last 50 years, the revolution in space sciences has progressed beyond our imagining. This relatively short history of modern scientific endeavour has resulted in people walking on the Moon, the development of an International Space Station and exploratory spacecraft roving the surface of Mars and probing the depths of space. Just 25 years ago, we had yet to find a single planet orbiting another star outside our solar system. Today, we study more than three thousand planets around stars other than our own and our knowledge continues to grow. The festival will run between the 3rd of October and the 9th of October 2017 at the University of Southern Queensland’s Toowoomba campus, starting at 5:30pm and ending at 7:30pm (Australian Eastern Standard Time). As part of the festival, we will also be holding an on-campus stargazing observation night on the Friday night (6th of October) from 7:30pm until 9:00pm (Australian Eastern Standard Time). |
