Event Description:  To celebrate the 10th anniversary of World Space Week, The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia teams up with NASA for a week-long spectacular display of cutting-edge technologies and demonstrations that will allow visitors to see, hear, and feel the future of space and robotics! The event kicks-off with the fifth annual Robotics Competition on Saturday, October 3 from 10am 5pm. See over 35 robots take part in a three-minute battle against one another displaying ingenuity, engineering creativity, and resilience. The winner takes home the coveted Franklin Cup. Watch live robot demonstrations, visit the static robot display and get an up close look at a full-size model of a NASA Mars Rover. On Saturday at 11am and 2pm, hear from NASA robotics engineer Mike Garrett as he presents highlights from his work at NASA. Also on Saturday, visitors can enter to win one of three Celestron FirstScope Series Telescopes that will be raffled off throughout the course of the day! Other activities throughout the weekend include lunar landing tours, solar viewing, live shows, make-n-takes and cart activities - all planned to celebrate the contributions of space science and technology. On Thursday, October 8, the Joel N. Bloom Observatory at The Franklin Institute remains open for evening viewing during the monthly Night Skies in the Observatory event from 6-9pm! Hosted by Chief Astronomer Derrick Pitts - the evening includes a Fels Planetarium show and a presentation on Space Robots with a special guest speaker, Smithsonian Museum scientist Andrew Johnston.
