Event Name: | Design Your Path to Space at Suffolk University |
Event Description: | Design Your Path to Space talk is a 50-minute presentation of the contribution of computer-technology in space systems as well as in reemployment of space technology in other industries, mainly the medical industry. Computers can be used in variety of ways, but simulation and visual representation will be the focus of this talk. Computer simulation, firstly, help estimate physical values such as radiation flux inside a spacecraft, virtually test designs such as the efficiency of thermal radiators and solar arrays on a spacecraft, and virtually test the reliability of automated spacecraft and rovers. The capabilities of computer simulation, therefore, leads to better optimization of spacecraft with a significantly lower price than building and testing every design. Additionally, simulation help in repurposing space technology such as radiation shielding in industries like radiation therapy and high energy physics labs like the LHC (Large Hadron Collider). Secondly, visual representation; it helps give spatial perspective through technologies such as virtual reality and augmented reality. In addition, visual representation can improve communication between the engineers and scientists working and the spacecraft, thus eliminating faults in the design. During this talk, Microsoft Hololens AR headset and the Oculus Rift VR headset will be used to demonstrate the benefits of visual representation. Moreover, a brief demonstration of The Monte Carlo FLUKA high energy physics simulator use in simulating radiation shielding.
