Event Name: | Topical Day | Animal models in space research |
Event Description: | Research in space on the International Space Station and on Earth with space analogues is essential to accelerate scientific discovery, technological innovation, and space exploration.. This topical day will focus on animal models in order to study and improve crew health in space and human health on Earth. In space, it is well known that the extreme environment composed of microgravity, chronic stress and ionizing radiation causes health problems in crew members. Interestingly, some of these changes mimic the onset and progression of disease and/or ageing on Earth. The purpose of this topical day is threefold: (1) review of animal models used to study space-related health problems, (2) discuss future strategies for sustaining and improving space animal model research in Europe, and (3) develop new collaborations in this field. In this context we have invited external, renowned speakers which are active in this research field to give presentations; Discussion sessions are included to stimulate the exchange of ideas. From 8:30 - 18:30h |
