Event Name:  Children's Congress: Celebrating World Space Week 2011
Event Description:  The Science Education Institute (SEI) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) held a series of space education activities from 4-8 October to celebrate the World Space Week with the theme “50 Years of Human Spaceflight". The Philippines World Space Week 2011 was organized by DOST-SEI under the leadership of Dr. Filma G. Brawner, SEI Director & WSW National Coordinator in partnership with the CSI Group of Companies headed by Vice-Mayor Belen Fernandez, CEO of CSI. Also in collaboration with the Department of Education (Division of Dagupan City) and DOST-PAGASA. The WSW 2011 celebration was held at the Stadia, CSI Mall Complex in Dagupan City on October 4-6, 2011.

Report on the Results:  October 04, 2011 The Opening Program was well attended by local officials of Dagupan City led by Vice-Mayor Belen Fernandez, Department of Education (DepEd) Officials, DOST-Science Education Institute officials and staff, teachers and students. The Vice-Mayor of Dagupan City gave the Welcome Remarks while the official representatives from DepEd and DOST delivered the Messages. The Keynote Speaker was Mr. Christopher Go, the amateur astronomer from Cebu City (Philippines) who discovered the Red Spot Jr. in Jupiter and who also worked with the Hubble Heritage Team to image the Quad Transit in Saturn. There was the Opening and Cutting of the Ribbon for the Robotics and Astronomy Exhibits including the DOST-PAGASA’s mobile planetarium show. The Exhibits and Planetarium Show were opened to the students, teachers and general public from October 4-6. A Lecture Forum for Students on “Space Explorations and the Human Race” was conducted for high school students and teachers. The speakers were Dr. Rogel Mari Sese of the University of the Philippine Los Banos (UPLB), Dr. Roland Otadoy and Mr. Christopher Go of the University of San Carlos. In the evening was a Lecture on Astronomy given by Dr. Rogel Mari Sese of UPLB and participated in by school officials, teachers, students and exhibitors. The Opening Program and Opening of Exhibits were covered by the media from the regional TV networks, local newspapers and local radio stations. October 05, 2011 There were parallel sessions in the morning and afternoon. The activities included: Forum for Teaches on Robotics Education; Training Workshop for Students on Water Rocket Design (High School Level); Lecture-Demonstration on Water Rocket Making (Elementary Level) ; On –the-Spot Poster Making Contest for Elementary Students; Making of Water Rockets and Trial Launchings (High School Level). Also, a Star-Gazing Activity was conducted by DOST-PAGASA and Dr. Sese in the mall complex that attracted public viewers. October 06, 2011 The National Water Rocket Launching Competition was participated in by high school students from various regions of the country. The winning team from the PSHS-CAR Campus was the representative of the Philippines in the Asia Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum (APRSAF)-18 Water Rocket Event held in Singapore on Decemebr3-4, 2011. The Vice Mayor of Dagupan City, other local officials, Education Officials, DOST-SEI Officials and staff, teachers and students witnessed the event. The Competition was covered by one of the Regional TV Network, Local Cable TV, and print media. At the end of the 3-day WSW celebration was the Closing and Awarding Program. The winners in the National Water Rocket Competition and On-the-Spot Poster Making Contest were awarded cash prizes and Certificate of Participation. The entire event was participated in by students, teachers and the general public.
