Report on the Results:  October 4, 2007: Adelaide, Australia. The coordinator of the Australian Section of Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) sent a letter on behalf of the WILPF membership to Robert D. McCallum Jr., the US Ambassador to Australia located in Canberra. She noted that this was the first day of both United Nations World Space Week and Keep Space for Peace Week, and she wrote in support of negotiations for a treaty on the prevention of an arms race in outer space. She pointed out, we are at a rare and precious moment in history when the United States, because of its predominance, is in a unique position to lead on the development of a treaty which could prevent for all time an arms race in outer space. She bemoaned the fact that instead, the United States is actually blocking negotiations on such a treaty, and is currently wasting billionsand potentially trillionsof dollars on research and development for missile defense, and weapons and nuclear power in space. She wrote, As we consider that this taxpayers' money could be better spent on human and environmental needs, we regard this as little more than a legalised robbery of the great mass of people. In closing, she again asserted the need to keep space for peace and respectfully urged the United States to stop blocking negotiations on a treaty for the prevention of an arms race in outer space, and to cease research and development on weapons and nuclear power in space.
