Report on the Results: | Satellites improve life On October 4, 1957, the first man-made satellite (Sputnik 1) was launched into outer space, marking the opening of the door to space exploration. On April 12, 1961, the Soviet Yuri Gagarin was the first human to orbit the Earth, announcing the opening of a new chapter of human adventures in outer space. On October 10, 1967, it entered into the "Magna Carta (Great Charter) Space Treaty", which is the basic instrument of international space law that is officially known as the Treaty of Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Field of Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and other celestial bodies (Attached to Resolution 2222 (XXI)) comes into effect. The use of space science, technologies and applications is increasing to support a wide range of United Nations activities. At least 25 United Nations agencies and the World Bank Group routinely use space applications. It makes important, and sometimes necessary, contributions to the work of the United Nations, including in implementing the recommendations of major global conferences and the recommendations of UNISPACE III, in the context of efforts towards sustainable development. As a result, coordination, cooperation and synergy within the United Nations system is required for the effective implementation of those activities by the United Nations system. The annual sessions of the Inter-Agency Meeting on Outer Space Activities are the main means of achieving this synergy. The effectiveness of that meeting has been made even more effective by the holding, since 2004, of an informal open session immediately after the conclusion of the meeting, as a means of engaging Member States in a direct and informal forum on important space-related developments in the United Nations system. The agenda for the Inter-Agency Meeting is reviewed during each session and is adapted to current practical needs. |
