Event Name: | Launch of Fundisa Disc and Fundisa Portal |
Event Description: | Fundisa disk is an educational tool that can also be used to conduct research and support business processes of various organisations. It was given to Universities in response to an identified gap of access to reliable and up-to-date data (satellite imagery). But because it was given as a contribution to the “data democracy initiative” then in the disk there was also provision of the open source (rather than proprietary) software tools to help interact and get value out of the provided data. There is a need to create awareness of the value satellite imagery adds to GIS analysis in the FET level of the schooling system (Grade 10, 11, 12) in support of curriculum prescripts in Geography (GIS is now part of the curriculum from Grade 10 but many learners do not have access to computers let alone computer-based GIS software and proprietary software like ESRI ArcGIS are very expensive with licenses costing over R100 000 per user) syllabus. In view of the above challenges, the Fundisa disk for schools initiative will be rolled out to school in a phased approach, starting first with the more advantaged (resource wise) Dinaledi schools then rolled out to other well-resourced schools. |
